And it's quite hard, whereas I learned to estimate how much miles (~1.5km), foot (30cm) and fluid ounces (12 floz = one soda can) are, I still simply say "oh wow!", when someone tells me how many square feet a certain area is, simply because I usually have no clue how much it is.
But on the other hand, there are some imperial units that are in heavy use in European countries. Unlike in Germany, this position is not simply filled by the person the secretary of justice selects, but it's a political office with a candidate elected by the people of Wisconsin. And apparently, in America, primaries are not only held for the president of the United States, but also for other positions, like the AG.
The next AG election is going to be in November, so advertising for the particular candidates for the primaries is displayed everywhere. This article in the Journal Sentinel gives a nice overview of the candidates. In short, two male republican candidates compete against two female democrats: the incumbent Peg Lautenschlager and another female candidate from Madison.
I didn't manage to get into the details of the race, but it's interesting to see how hard the competition for this office is here in Wisconsin. And since the candidates are all party members and elected by the general public, the political issues that are not quite connected to fighting crime also play a role in the race.
Sat, 26 Aug 2006 12:29:19 -0700 http://philipp-krebs.com/index.php?/archives/142-guid.html Why is the US Postal service so friendly? http://philipp-krebs.com/index.php?/archives/140-Why-is-the-US-Postal-service-so-friendly.html Grafton, WI http://philipp-krebs.com/index.php?/archives/140-Why-is-the-US-Postal-service-so-friendly.html#comments http://philipp-krebs.com/wfwcomment.php?cid=140 1 http://philipp-krebs.com/rss.php?version=2.0&type=comments&cid=140 nospam@example.com (Philipp Krebs) When buying some stamps at the post office today, the service was extremely friendly for the second time I've been there. Why isn't that possible in Germany? Other than I thought, the US postal service is fully government-owned. And they even have a monopoly on first-class mail, more or less like in Germany and other european countries. In Germany, the Bundespost has always been unfriendly and queues usually reach out the front door in peak times.
Maybe, it's simply the awareness that, even in a government-owned company, the wages are finally paid for by the customer. An altitude that is way more common over here than in Germany, as it seems to me. Having never heard of anything like this, I started asking co-workers and did some research on the internet to find out what's the deal behind all this.
Apparently, the US maintains a database of all males between 18 and 25 to be able to perform a military draft in case this is needed. In Germany, every male usually gets a similar letter at the age of 17 where he's asked to confirm his personal information, so that the government can invite him to the army physical as soon as he's out of school. The difference is that whereas the data is submitted automatically in Germany, US citizen are required by law to register manually. However, the data is automatically submitted when a male citizen applies for a Social Security Number or a driver's license - I did both.
Theoretically, non-immigrant aliens like me are not required to register and should not be in the database. So apparently, somebody wasn't paying attention at some agency I dealt with. Luckily, there's also a possibility to unregister by sending some proof to the SSS. I think I'll do that, although there shouldn't be any trouble arising from being in the database, as long as there's no draft.
Sat, 15 Jul 2006 07:18:38 -0700 http://philipp-krebs.com/index.php?/archives/113-guid.html
